How to Synchronize All Your Social Media Efforts (A few examples)

If you deal with social media, or media of any sort, you must have heard how important it is to synchronize all your activities. Colors, message, tone, images, and every other imaginable has to be kept consistent across all platforms. Every list and guide that your read preaches this but in reality this is slightly harder than expected. Sometimes it isn't that easy just to read a list and execute everything properly. In cases like that I do what many others do, I draw “inspiration” from others who are following the checklist and doing it right. By inspiration I mean I find someone who is doing well and copy what they are doing well. To help out with inspiration below are three companies that are having success on social media across multiple platforms.

To focus in on a successful integrated approach and proper use of social media we will look at a few main points for each company. They will be:

1.       Are all channels similar in content, theme, and branding?
2.       Are the colors used consistent?
3.       Are hashtags utilized on channels that allow hashtags?
4.       Are there any other items of note?

INTEL

Didn’t expect Intel? Considering that Intel makes chips and other assorted computer hardware you may not think that they are very social media savvy. After all a very small part of their business depends on B2C sales. However Intel is very active both advertising their products as well as on social media.

Intel does an extremely good job at synchronizing all their social media channels. The blue and gold trademark colors of Intel are not only prevalent on ever banner on their networks but throughout many of the images and graphics posted. Many of the images used by Intel are used across the different social media platforms. Don’t consider that a bad thing, there is no point in creating something new for every platform. Not everyone follows the same company on every network. As branding goes Intel is incredibly thorough. Each platform features similar highlights about technology, science, and progress. This has been a branding effort of Intel for a very long time now.

If you check each of the platforms for Intel each one is updated on a regular basis, from Twitter to Instagram. Intel will often mention other users or include user created material on their social media platforms. The only downside of Intel is their limited interaction with the users on their social media platforms. There are very few Intel to consumer interactions on any of the platforms, although this could be due to the nature of their product.

Popchips

If you haven’t tried Popchips you should, they are delicious and supposedly healthier than regular chips. Popchips is a very social company and one that strongly leverages social media and social marketing. From grass roots campaigns to now hiring celebrity endorses Popchips has maintained their mantra of “One snacker at a time”.

An important part of Popchips strategy is the interaction between the company and its consumers. On each platform the company will frequently engage in conversation, respond to questions, and feature certain users. Each week Popchips highlights a fan of the week which then receives a prize like a case of chips. These fans are highlighted across all platforms, not just the one on which they engaged with Popchips. Posts are often tagged with hashtags and other users.

Given the social focus of Popchips all of their social platforms are very well curated. The content is continually updated with recipes, images, user created content, and original content created by Popchips. All of the platforms are integrated and content is shared across each of the platforms to reinforce a constant theme and brand. On the Popchips website the “Poplive” tab summarizes all the social media platforms that Popchips is on. You can click on each of the platforms and see a summary of all the posts on that platform as well as jump to the Popchips page on that platform. Just by browsing through the multiple platforms you can see the consistency of imagery, messaging, and conversation on all platforms.

Dogfish Head Beer

Talking about a beers social media presence may not be as good as drinking it but at least it comes close. If you like trying new beers from up and coming breweries then you may have heard of Dogfish Head. Just like many of the other upstarts Dogfish is utilizing social media to raise awareness about its beers. Dogfish has taken to all the most popular social networks to advertise and promote.

Dogfish is great at conversing with its customers. From answering every questions to simply saying “Hey” Dogfish is utilizing the two way communication of social media. Their posts are frequent and well timed. Just by scrolling through the Facebook timeline you notice that they post every day, sometimes twice a day at the most active times for social media. The posts will at times refer to other social media platforms such as Twitter or YouTube to highlight some of the different content presented on each platform.

The imagery, and more importantly, the tone on each social media platform is the same. The brewery portrays itself as fun loving, trying to bring their customers the best beer possible without compromising on taste.  This is evident in the conversations they have with their customers, the highlights of their products, and the involvement of the community.

Me

A bit about myself in the words of my mother.

I will freely admit that I don’t like talking about myself, but I will try to do my best. I will use some of the words of my biggest supporter and biggest critic, my mother. After all she has known me the longest out of anybody.

To put it simply I am a father, risk taker, thinker, visionary, below average photographer, techie, early adopter, and an overall good guy. Through my life I have found teamwork and personal dedication is paramount to creating great products. I am my biggest critic. I don’t believe in working in a vacuum and find that ideas are best bounced of others. I am not too formal nor too relaxed.

Don't like to read? Check out my Pinterest board dedicated to myself.

How I like to think of myself, sans alcohol.

My Experience

Life has given me the opportunity to work in the most varied jobs and locations imaginable. From walking the streets of Iraq, to recruiting for the US Army, to working on national policy to presenting multi-million projects to Army generals.

I am a social media nut. My recent work has found me deeply involved in the development of the utilization of social media for information operations. My focus has been on understanding how social media works and how you can measure the effect from social media. Social media metrics, statistics, and analytics have been the focus of my work for the last three years.

Blogs, Types of Blogs, and a Few Examples

Did you know there are multiple types of blogs? If yes, feel free to watch the funny cat’s video at the bottom of the post and skip everything else. If no, then read through this post. There are five general types of blogs, each with unique characteristics to them. Each of the five are listed below with an example of each. To better understand each blog I went over some of the specifics, strengths, and issues of each blog. Also, watch the cat video, it is hilarious.

NEWS BLOG – News blogs often look just like a regular online news site containing articles about the topic that the blog is dedicated to. Typically these blogs have multiple contributors and heavily utilize social media for propagation.

EXAMPLE

Business Insider is a great example of a news blog focusing on financial and business news. The blog provides a variety of information from news, to finance, to some entertainment content related to finance. The mix of the articles makes it a blog where you can both get your daily dose of news as well as waste time looking at inforgraphics or Instagram pictures from George Soros’s wedding. Business Insider is different from many other business news sites as it rarely publishes any type of analysis. Most of the articles focus on opinion pieces, highlights of companies and people, as well as business topics trending on social media.

The blog is updated frequently from multiple writers. The entire blog follows the same layout, graphics, and a clean, white background. The buttons are large and easy to navigate. Every page has social media buttons linking to all major social media platforms.  Every time you open an article the blog suggest more similar articles that you may like.

Business Insider does not appear on terms such as “business news” on the first page of either Google or Bing. Articles within the blog are very popular on social media, I have personally seen them on both my Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Through the social media sharing buttons on top of each page allows each post to be easily shared. The blog gains a lot of its readership by closely following what is popular on social media and displaying it in the “Trending” column.

Business Insider overall does an excellent job of filling a specific niche in business news. By shying away from financial analysis and focusing on trending and interest pieces the blog is drawing a wide reading. This is validated by the advertising on the site from AMEX, Samsung, and other companies that advertise various products for small and medium sized businesses. The major glaring issue for Business Insider is SEO. By improving their rating on both Google and Bing the blog could greatly increase viewership.

PROFESSIONAL / SEMI-PROFESSIONAL BLOG – Professional blogs are usually very high standard, well-polished, post frequently and focus on the company’s news and features.  A semi – professional blog is only different in the amount of time and material being invested in the blog since there may be only one or a part time blogger.

EXAMPLE

The US Playstation (PS) blog is “where the people who create the PlayStation experience meet gamers and fans directly. Conversation here goes both ways..”. The blog is unique that it asks for PS users and others to interact with the blog authors both through social media and directly on the blog. The writers and employees at PS will often reply to comments within the blog despite the number of posts and comments each day.

Everything within the blog reflects the PS brand and its current advertising and media strategy. As the release of the new generation consoles grows closer PS has aggressively advertised the new PS4. The content on the blog reflects both news about the new PS4 as well as updates readers on older games and console versions. The blog utilizes the traditional PS color scheme as well as integrates the PS Plus network into the blog. The blog is advertised on the main PS webpage and the articles are commonly shared on social media by both users and other sites linking to the content.

The US PS blog is a great example of what a professional blog should look like. It fully integrates into the PS advertising efforts and strives to be as social as possible. The contributors on the blog engage the readers not only on the website but also on other social media platforms. The blog can be easily found if you search for PS and blog. It does not appear on the front page though if you just search for PS. The blog itself has no advertising but has links to other PS products and services that serve as a form of self-advertising.

RECREATIONAL BLOGS – Recreational blogs are the one man shows, somebody posting on their timeline (whenever they want) about a subject that they love. They typically are not created to make oney but occasionally can earn a bit. The provide opinions and instructions from the writers perspective.

EXAMPLE

Food Wishes with Chef John is probably the only small time blog that I personally follow. Chef John blogs about anything that is food related, often posting recipes and videos. There is no specific food theme but really anything goes. John also posts some of his recipes on other recipe sharing websites.

Food Wishes and Chef John has a unique style of “voice” on the blog. It is very rare that in any of his recipes you need unicorn tears or other rare ingredients that you run across sometimes on food blogs. Seriously, who keeps fennel pollen and coconut milk in their pantry? Chef John also infuses humor and personal stories through his posts and videos that make each post both informational and humorous.

Over the past few years Food Wishes has won several awards as a food blog that drives a lot of the traffic to the blog. Chef John has also posted his recipes on many other websites such as www.allrecipies.com, however on most of those websites there is no direct link back to his blog. If you search his name he is one of the top search results, for a food blog search Food Wishes is a few pages back. Also the front page lacks any social media or sharing buttons that hinders the blogs ability to become more popular. Since the blog is hosted on BlogSpot the archiving system on the front page is confusing.

AGGREGATOR / LINK SHARING BLOGS – Aggregator and link sharing blogs are relatively new. One of the biggest aggregator platform that you may have heard of is Tumblr. These blogs rarely have original material but instead list links, pictures, and videos to other content. There are companies that are posting on these blogs with original content linked back to the company’s website.

EXAMPLE

The TJ Maxx Tumblr blog is a great example of both an aggregator blog as well as a company’s blog that is taking advantage of this new blog medium. Unlike many of the other aggregator blogs most of the posts on TJ Maxx’s blog is new and original content. Just like other aggregator blogs this blog does not post anything lengthy as all posts are pictures with a short one or two sentence description. All posts reflect the TJ Maxx brand of shopping for less and still being able to buy trendy clothes.

The blog itself is integrated with the banding efforts by TJ Maxx. The colors remain constant between commercials, the TJ Maxx website, and the blog. Words that are associated with TJ Maxx such as “maxxinista” are utilized on the website.

One of the issues with aggregator blogs is the search rating of the blog. If you directly search for the TJ Maxx blog the Tumblr page is found on the first page of search. If you simply search for TJ Maxx then the blog is relegated to the third page.

The blog itself is overall very well rounded. It has multiple tabs that are devoted to either fashionable outfits put together by TJ Maxx designers, user submissions, or new arrivals at TJ Maxx. There are links to all social media platforms utilized by the company. Since this is a brand blog there is no advertising, but there is advertising on some aggregator blogs.

GROUP BLOGS – Group blogs are blogs that have multiple contributors. They function as a place for many authors to blog and provide content about a topic. They can be for fun or revenue producing blogs.

EXAMPLE

Twenties Hacker deals with everything that an average may be concerned with. There is a set core of writers that submit articles to the blog and several that guest blog. The blog offers advice from food, to career, to travel. Are you thinking of quitting your job? There is a blog post about that. The blog provides others experiences of others about issues that someone out of college may be struggling with or trying to make decisions about.

The blog is not very well known. In part this is due to the sporadic posting schedule. Despite the multiple bloggers you may get five posts one week and two the next. This sets the blog back in search results and how much social media exposure it receives. There are social media buttons prominently displayed and many of the articles have more social media exposure than the website itself.

A Review of Marriott and Marriott's Web Presence

Marriott and the Web.

Last week I looked at Marriott as an example of Integrated Communications. This week we will look a little bit more in depth at Marriott’s web presence and the company’s website. Before we dive deeper it has to be noted that Marriott is a large company that is also the parent of other chains such Ritz-Carlton, Courtyard, and Renaissance Hotels. Many of the Marriott and subsidiary local hotels also have their own websites which are separate from the main website. It would be impossible to analyze every single hotels and chains website so we will look at the main Marriott website and how it relates to their flagship hotel chain.

Architecture of the Website

If you type in www. marriott.com and take a look at the desktop version of the website you will immediately notice that it is an active JavaScript page. You can click on any of the five rectangles they will switch places allowing the user to move to another part of the website. The very initial screen allows the user to reserve a hotel room for the location and date range required. The other four screens discuss deals offered by Marriott, member rewards, and highlights the other Marriott owned hotel chains.

www.marriott.com main page.

The bottom bar of images is scrollable but the Get Connected button is always in the middle inviting the user to read blogs by Marriott, connect with them on multiple social media platforms or add Marriott to your RSS feed. Below the buttons there is a list of all the Marriott owned chains and links to respective websites. All the websites for each independent chain open as an inlay in the main Marriott website.

If you click on any of buttons or links such as Explore & Plan or Meetings & Events the pages look visually the same throughout the website. The reservation menu, meeting scheduler, and rewards menu all look very similar making it easy for the user to brown among the website without being confused. If you skip to any of the sub-pages from the main landing page the structure of the page remains the same with a static top menu bar and all options or links listed in a bar or JavaScript pop up on the left.

The mobile website is a very simple, flat gray page. It only has a total of five links and a link at the bottom to the Marriott mobile app for both iOS and Android. As your browse through the mobile website the page remains a dull gray with five to six links per page.

The Design

Each of the different chains have a unique color scheme, however the Marriott main page and all Marriott pages retain the same color scheme. The menus are metal gray and the page has a white background. This carries over to Marriot’s social media pages such as Facebook and Twitter. Marriott’s Instagram page breaks from this color scheme but this is mostly to Instagram’s restrictions on how profiles are displayed.
Among the grey menus and white backgrounds majority of the pages have images from different Marriott hotels or destinations in vivid color. This stands out against the otherwise matted color scheme. Some other pages within the website have lists of locations or options instead of a menu side on the left side. The

Social Media and Content

The Get Connected button on the landing page takes the user to what could be called the social hub of Marriott’s webpage. The regular reservation and member rewards tabs get replaced by a number of different topics about Marriott such as Culture and Hotel Development. As typical on the left hand there is a menu that contains buttons that link to Marriott’s social media profiles and the ability to add them to your Yahoo and Google RSS reader.

Deals, information, and info about the different hotels are continually updated throughout the website. The most updated part of the website are the deals and special offers from Marriott. Each continent, region, and hotel is neatly listed and updated. Some of the deals are reflected on Marriott’s social media channels but social media channels don’t focus too heavily on advertising Marriott or special deals.

The Push and Pull on Marriott.com

The Marriott website has very little push marketing involved. There are no pop ups or automatically playing videos. You can sign up for e-mail lists or follow Marriott through your RSS but there isn’t even direct advertising for that. The website does have a ton of pull advertising with deals and guides embedded on almost every page. Many of the pages display large, colorful images of beautiful locations across the world where there are Marriott hotels. There are member’s rewards and rewards credit cards but there is no content being directly pushed through the website.
On the web Marriott utilizes SEO and buys advertising space on Google, Bing, and Yahoo. By searching specific cities either Marriott or one the subsidiaries will pop up as an advertised page.

What Could Marriott Improve?

Personally I would say that I am not a huge fan of the grey and white color theme. Although the colorful images stand out vividly in the color scheme the page overall can look drab at times. The links and lists utilized on the website are also a drab grey with no hint of color anywhere.

Although Marriott’s social media accounts are well ran the social media page on Marriott’s website is not as well done. The social media buttons on the left hand menu are barely visible and not all of Marriott’s accounts are listed. The RSS feed logo for Yahoo is the old Yahoo symbol as is the Google logo although that is barely noticeable. This page is also the only location where the social media buttons are located. If they would be placed throughout the main Marriott webpage it would improve the flow of customers between the social media accounts and the website.

An Example of Integrated Communications.

There are a number of companies that have successfully integrated multiple channels to successfully advertise themselves and further their brand. Nike is a common example of a multinational company that utilizes market research and multiple communications channels to retain their dominance within the industry. Zappos is an online based company that is often touted as an example of excellence. However I would like to focus on another company, Marriott.

Marriott and Integrated Communications.

There are a number of other large hotel chains that offer similar amenities and services and everybody has a personal favorite. I may be slightly preferential because I own a Marriott rewards card but through my travels and research I believe that Marriott has done an outstanding job in reaching its target audience and building its brand. Marriott utilizes multiple media channels as well as tries to connect with the travel at every possible touch point. The hotel chain understands that is serves two major groups of consumers, the business travel and the leisure traveler. Through its advertising both of these consumer bases are seamlessly targeted. Also Marriott is one of the few companies that I follow on Facebook and Twitter.

Mariott and Social Media

Mariott utilizes all the standard social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter actively. The platforms maintain a good mix of self-promotion and targeted content for their consumer. Marriott’s social media platforms don’t just advertise the softness of their pillows but attempt to contribute to their customer’s trips. This can be anything from airport tips that they post to suggesting apps about bike travel routes in Amsterdam. The posts feature events, travel locations, festivals, and interesting articles about all the places that Marriott has a hotel. The social media platforms will also at times feature pictures and posts by customers or employees.

The advertisements of traditional media channels are synchronized with Marriott’s online advertisements and campaigns, and vice versa. The latest example is the push to advertise Marriott’s mobile application and its many benefits.  The app allows the user to check in early, check out, reserve rooms and synch to their membership accounts. All these benefits and more were advertised acrosstraditional channels such as print, TV, and social media such as Facebook andTwitter.

Marriott also utilizes e-mail and maintains several blogs. Each blog is unique, there is one that is dedicated to food, or another one ran by the CEO of Marriott Arne Sorenson. The e-mails to subscribers follow the mantra of the social media platforms and rarely advertise Marriott or any of their features. Instead the blogs focus on topics such as travel destinations, food, advice, or personal stories from the companies employees. The e-mail advertising is a mix of deals, articles, and promotions.

Just like any other major chain Marriott has a number of customer loyalty programs such as credit cards, frequent customer rewards, and special deals for returning customers. Although these in themselves are not unique they are advertised throughout the other channels that Marriott uses.

The Bad

Nobody is perfect. There are a few issues that Marriott has. The Facebook and Twitter accounts are well managed but the same cant be said for some other platforms. Marriott’s Pinterest page has a few pins but overall is desolate of action or followers. The pins are focused on thing that leisure travelers may be interested in but the platform is barely advertised. The Instagram page fares slightly better, but not by much.
You would expect that such a large company would be able to actively engage in every large social media platform.

In Conclusion

Overall Marriott does an excellent job in integrating theonline and standard marketing channels. The TV advertisements, social media platforms, and direct outreach to customers focus on specific communications goals that Marriott has set. Marriott’s integrated communications has allowed it to sustain and marginally increase their stock price through an economic downturn. At least they were not bought like Hilton was.

Monday, September 2, 2013

Traditional and social media marketing are not the same but that doesn’t mean that they are in a competition. Classical marketing and channels are at times viewed as inflexible due to their long production times. Mediums such as television require the purchase of air time, the development of advertising, airing, and only then can results be measured. Social media on the other hand is the new and fresh thing, it is like the new cool kid on the block. There have been numerous creative social media campaigns that have bucked the traditional advertising trend. The reveal of the 2011 Ford Explorer is a common example of a successful social media campaign. The application of social media is not limited to just advertising campaigns but can be extended to customer support like Nike did. Nike has its @Nike Twitter handle as well as @NikeSupport handle for all product questions and needs.

Let’s jump of the “praise social media” soap box for a bit though. People today easily go from the online to offline world at any given time, especially with the spread of mobile enabled devices. The blend of traditional marketing and social media gives your greater control over your message than ever before. Traditional marketing activities still work, direct mail is incredibly successful for many types of businesses.

A perceived advantage of social media is that it is available for everybody, everywhere and it not the same for traditional channels (TV, print, OOH). Advertising for traditional channels is pre-planned based on market research, target audiences are identified, localized, and then advertised to. This is very true, but social media campaigns should be executed the same way.

Running a social media campaign is an investment of money and time. The internet is available everywhere and anyone can access your content. This is great if you are an international conglomerate like Coka-Cola, not so great if you are a local boutique. A localized business will carefully analyze its consumers and identify current audience as well as potential target audiences and then and try to create content for them. Google AdWords has an intimidating amount of data and metrics from which someone can choose to advertise to. The great advantage of social media is the ability to receive feedback in the real time. This feedback and abundance of data gives the ability to adjust online advertising on the go. Don’t throw money away on advertising to anyone who will look at your content, put your content at the feet of those who want to see it.

The second common concept is that social media has the advantage of being available all the time, and it is, to the consumer. Social media and traditional support channels are very similar, they depend on the availability of the person. To be able to respond to consumer request someone has to be available 24/7 on a phone line just like on a Twitter handle. The upper hand that social media has is the ability for consumers to engage at any time and for the company to respond during business hours. This is also a great detractor since issues can spiral out of control much faster in an online environment than over traditional mediums.  Just take a look at a few examples of social media gone bad for companies.

Social media and traditional channels are moving closer and closer together every day. For example, is Netflix a social media enable channel or a traditional channel? On one hand it is a TV channel, an online Blockbuster of sorts. On the other hand I can leave ratings, reviews, and connect with friends to see what they are watching. Amazon is a giant online retailer that extensively uses traditional media to advertise. There are numerous examples of online and traditional channels crossing paths.

Online social enabled and traditional advertising is closer than ever, and is moving closer and closer. The only thing that separates traditional marketing and social media marketing is traditional thinking. There is traditional thinking on both sides, with social media evangelists ignoringtraditional media just as much.  Don’t deride anything that you can use. Print a flyer inviting people to your Facebook page, put a YouTube video up inviting people to read your magazine. Mix and match what you have available and synchronize it together for some awesome results.
